Why We Always Pair Our Mascot Characters With a Live Entertainer (And Why It Makes All the Difference

If you've been browsing around, looking to hire a mascot character for your kid's birthday party in Auckland, you might have noticed something different about how we do things at A Couple of Characters. We never send a mascot character out alone. Full stop. Every single time we bring one of our mascot entertainers to a party, they come paired with one of our non-mascot characters, like a princess, a superhero, a fairy, whoever fits the theme. And honestly? It's one of the best decisions we've ever made for our business and for the kids we entertain. Here's the full story on why we do it this way, and why I genuinely think it results in a better party experience for everyone involved.

First, what even is a mascot character?

Just to make sure we're on the same page — a mascot character is one of those big, full-body costume characters where the performer is completely covered head to toe. Think Elmo, Mickey Mouse, Bluey, dinosaurs, that sort of thing. The performer inside can't really be seen, can't speak clearly (sometimes at all), and their movement is limited because of the big costume head and the restricted vision. They are absolutely magical for photos and for that huge wow moment when kids spot them across the room. No arguments there. But they come with some real limitations that a solo mascot hire can't get around, and that's exactly where having a second entertainer alongside them changes everything.

Reason #1: Mascots can actually terrify younger kids

I'll be real with you here. Big costume heads freak some kids out. Especially the little ones, we're talking two, three, four-year-olds. You've probably seen it happen at Disneyland or at McDonald's. The kid who was absolutely obsessed with Bluey on TV suddenly bursts into tears the second the real-life version leans in for a hug. It's completely normal. The character is huge, doesn't speak in a voice they recognise, and moves differently to what they expect from the screen. Without another entertainer there to bridge that gap — to crouch down, talk to the kid, reassure them, and gently introduce the mascot from a safe distance — that moment can spiral into the kid being upset for the rest of the party. When we send a face character alongside the mascot, they become the translator. They're the warm, friendly, talking human presence that kids can engage with naturally. They introduce the mascot, hype them up, create the excitement, and make sure every kid feels safe and comfortable before the mascot comes in for a cuddle or a photo.

If your child is sensitive to new experiences or loud places, tell us when you book so both entertainers can be extra gentle and patient.

Reason #2: Mascots literally can't run the party on their own

Here's something people don't think about until they're standing in their lounge with 20 sugared-up five year olds and a character in a full foam head who can barely hear through the costume. Mascot entertainers have real physical limitations. Their vision is restricted — they're usually looking through a mesh screen in the costume's mouth or eyes. They can't always hear clearly. They can't do face painting, they can't tie balloon animals, they can't easily get down on the floor to play games with kids. Running a full two-hour party program solo like that? Not a chance. Our face character entertainers are the engine of the party. They run the games, lead the activities, do the singing, and keep the energy going. The mascot is the star of the show — the character the kids go wild for — but the face character is the one actually holding the whole thing together behind the scenes. It's genuinely like having a host and a headline act at the same time. Both essential. Both doing completely different jobs

Reason #3: Safety. Full stop.

This one's non-negotiable for us. Inside a full mascot costume, the performer has limited visibility and can't always react quickly if a child runs into them, trips, or needs immediate attention. In a room full of excited kids running around at full speed, that's a real concern. Having a second entertainer who is fully visible, fully mobile, and completely aware of everything happening in the room means someone is always able to respond instantly. Whether it's a kid who's upset, a parent who needs something, or just keeping the chaos organised — that second person is absolutely essential from a safety standpoint.

We take our duty of care seriously. Always.

Reason #4: The photos are so much better

Okay, this one's a bit of a bonus reason, but parents always appreciate it. When you've got a mascot character AND a face character in the photo with your kid, you get this brilliant layered moment — the big wow of the costume character alongside a beautiful, engaging face character who's actually interacting with your child. Solo mascot photos can feel a bit flat because there's nothing for the child to connect with. Add a princess or a superhero into the mix, and suddenly you've got a genuinely gorgeous, dynamic shot that doesn't look like a shopping centre photo op. I've seen parents tear up looking at some of the photos we've captured at parties. That's what we're going for.

"We hired Chase, Skye and a Ryder for our daughter's 4th birthday and it was honestly the most magical thing. Ryder kept our shy daughter calm and warmed her up to Chase and Skye so beautifully. By the end she didn't want to let Skye go! Best money we've ever spent on a party."

Reason #5: It's literally in our name

A Couple of Characters. Two entertainers. It's not just branding, t's the whole philosophy of what we do. When my partner and I started this business back in 2013, we built it around the idea that two entertainers working together always create a better experience than one working alone. The energy between two characters, the way they play off each other, the way they can split the room and give individual attention to more kids at once — it's a completely different level of entertainment. Every party package we offer is built with that in mind. You're not just hiring a character. You're hiring a team

The bottom line

Hiring a mascot character for your kid's party in Auckland is a brilliant idea — as long as it's done right. The big costume moments, the photos, the sheer excitement on kids' faces when their favourite character walks through the door? That stuff is priceless. But a mascot on their own is only half the picture. Pairing them with a skilled, experienced face character entertainer is what takes a good party and makes it genuinely unforgettable. It's safer, it's more engaging, it's better managed, and honestly — it's just a way better time for everyone in the room. That's why we do it. And after hundreds of parties across Auckland, we wouldn't have it any other way.
